Fmonipod

The new iPod arrived at Boinx Software. First impression: the box is small, real small. Time to load stuff onto it. "Achim Had A Little Lamp" was quickly converted for the iPod using Apple's QuickTime Player Pro.

A nasty surprise awaited us, however: the H.264 based iPod presets for FotoMagico and iVeZeen did not work as specified. It is more tricky than apparent at first sight to create a movie that will play on the new iPod using QuickTime APIs. We updated both FotoMagico and iVeZeen to include fixes. iVeZeen 2.1.1 has a new piece of code which uses a different exporter to create the H.264 file. To incorporate this new code in FotoMagico turns out to be a challenge, so FotoMagico 1.2.6 has a new preset based on the MPEG-4 format until the new code works and has been tested.

Apple Distinguished Educator Paul Shaw sends us a pointer to the Gold Coast KidsCongress™ where the kids created "The Challenge of Transport" using iStopMotion. KidsCongress™ is a technology and learning conference for 9-12 year olds that is run by kids for kids. A great idea worth being copied all over the world.

Stopmotionshaw

I recently stumbled upon this book by Susannah Shaw: "Stop Motion". I ordered my copy, but it is difficult to have it shipped to Europe from the US, so it will probably take some more time before I can review it myself. But it has a well known reviewer: Ray Harryhausen. He says: "A wonderful introduction to a rather complicated and unique art form." Other reviewers include Richard Goleszowski, director of Creature Comforts and Rex the Runt, and David Sproxton, co-founder and Managing Director of Aardman Animations. Their reviews make me crave this book.

The team was at the movies on Tuesday, watching Wallace and Gromit. Great movie. Compared to the recent Computer Graphics Animation films by Pixar and others, the stop motion technique shows some imperfections which come with all hand crafts. This movie proves that the story is everything. And the story in Wallace & Gromit is truly great.

Burger King in Germany has a co-marketing program with the movie. The toys they offer with the Kids Menu are a piece of clay and a form for making the Wallace and Gromit characters with. Do they work for a fan film? Are they suitable for home stop motion movies? They are a bit small and fragile. Also they are one colored, so features like eyes and mouth are indistiguable. The clay is a special sort of clay which does not stick to the form but also lacks a certain stability. To animate them is very hard. You have to be very careful not to destroy the features of the figures when you move the arms or legs. Nevertheless it is a great way to show kids the principle of clay animation. And kids will have a lot of fun destroying and recreating the characters anyways.

So, send us your fan films made with iStopMotion. We will certainly post a link here!
